How CareersNZ works

CareersNZ is a national talent pool that flips recruitment around. Candidates stay in control of their details, and employers reach out only to people who genuinely fit. Here is how both sides work, in full.

The short version

Candidates join a pool instead of applying to adverts. Employers browse the pool instead of waiting for applications. Nobody's contact details move until the candidate decides to apply for a specific role. That single rule is what makes the rest of it work.

For job seekers

You join the talent pool as a job-ready candidate, build a simple profile, and choose your region and the sector or sectors you are interested in. From that point you are visible to employers as a short, privacy-minimal card: a first name, your location, any licences or endorsements, and a brief bio. Your surname, email and phone number are never shown.

When an employer likes the look of your card, they invite you to apply. You decide whether to go ahead. Nothing about you reaches the employer until you choose to apply, so there are no cold calls and no handing your contact details to strangers. You can update your details or withdraw from the pool at any time.

What is on your card, exactly

• First name. Not your surname.
• Region or location. Chosen by you from every New Zealand region, or set to flexible if you would relocate.
• Sectors. One or several. Tick more than one and you appear to more employers.
• Licences and endorsements. Driver classes, forklift, site safety and first aid tickets, if you hold them. This is the single strongest signal on the card for practical roles.
• A short bio. Two or three sentences in your own words about what you are after and what you are like to work with.

Your email address is collected so you can be invited and so the profile stays yours. It is never displayed to an employer.

Writing a bio that gets you invited

The bio is the only free text an employer reads, so it does more work than anything else on the card. Say what you are after, say what you can already do, and say what you are willing to learn. Concrete beats impressive. "Reliable and punctual, after a warehouse or driving role in Auckland, happy with early starts and physical work, keen to get my F endorsement" tells an employer more than a paragraph about being passionate and dynamic.

What happens after you join

Nothing arrives immediately, and that is normal. Employers post roles as they need people, so an invitation depends on someone hiring in your sector and region. In the meantime you stay visible at no cost and with no obligation. When an invitation does come, it names the employer and the role, so you can judge it before spending a minute on an application.

For employers

Registering is free. You verify a business email, then post a role directly or paste a Seek or Trade Me link and we prefill the details. We match your listing to candidates in the same sector and region and show you their cards. You tick the people you would like to hear from, and we invite them to apply on your behalf.

You only ever see candidates for the sectors you are hiring in, and you only receive full contact details when a candidate chooses to apply to your role. That keeps your shortlist relevant and keeps the candidate in control.

Posting or pasting a role

There are two ways in. Create the listing inside CareersNZ, or paste the link to an advert you already have running on Seek or Trade Me. If you paste a link, CareersNZ reads your own advert to prefill the title and detail, and matched candidates apply on that existing listing rather than through a duplicate. CareersNZ does not harvest or store data from job sites, and the only candidate information in the system comes from candidates who chose to join the pool.

Verification, and why it exists

Employers verify a business email before they can see candidate cards. It is a small step that does a lot of work: it keeps the pool free of people fishing for personal data, and it is the reason candidates are willing to be visible in the first place. If candidates stop trusting the pool, there is no pool.

Why it is built this way

Job seekers are tired of blasting their details across the internet and fielding calls about roles that do not fit. Employers are tired of sifting through applications from people who were never a match. A private talent pool solves both: candidates are only ever contacted about roles that suit them, and employers only ever spend time on people who chose to apply.

There is a second reason, and it is about who gets seen. Traditional applicant screening rewards people who already look the part on paper. A career changer with the right temperament and the wrong last job title gets filtered out before a human reads a word. A pool built around region, sector, licences and a human sentence gives those people a way back into view, which is the whole point of a national talent pool rather than another job board.

What CareersNZ does not do

• It does not sell or rent candidate data.
• It does not scrape candidates from other job sites.
• It does not publish candidate profiles as public web pages, and they are not indexed by search engines.
• It does not charge candidates, ever, and does not take a cut of anyone's wages.
• It does not pass your details to an employer because they asked. Only an application does that.
