Privacy at CareersNZ

Privacy is the whole point of CareersNZ. This page explains, in plain terms, what we collect, what we show, what we never show, and the control you keep over your details.

What we collect

For a candidate in the talent pool: a first name, an email address, a region, the sectors you select, any licences or endorsements you tick, and a short bio you write yourself. We do not require a surname to be in the pool, and we do not require a CV.

For an employer: a business email address, business details sufficient to verify you are a genuine New Zealand business, and the roles you post.

What employers can see

When you are in the talent pool, an employer with a matching role sees a privacy-minimal card: your first name, your location or region, any licences and endorsements you have added, your sector of interest, and a short bio. That is all.

What employers never see

Your surname, email address and phone number are never shown to an employer while you are simply in the pool. These details are shared only when you choose to apply to a specific role. Until that moment, the first move always stays yours.

Applying to one role does not open your details to any other employer, and it does not remove you from the pool.

Your profile is not a public page

Candidate profiles are not published as web pages. They are not linked from the public site, they are not indexed by Google, Bing or any other search engine, and they cannot be found by searching your name. This is deliberate, and it is the reason people who are currently employed are willing to be in the pool at all.

Your control

How we handle your information

We use your details only to match you to relevant roles and to let you apply when you choose to. We do not sell your information. Employers are verified New Zealand businesses, which keeps the pool trustworthy. If you have a question about your data or want it removed, email hello@careersnz.co.nz and we will help.

How long we keep it

We keep your profile while you are in the pool. When you withdraw, your card stops appearing to employers immediately and your details are removed from active matching. Records of applications you chose to send may remain with the employer you sent them to, since that information is theirs once you have applied.

Cookies and tracking

CareersNZ uses only the cookies needed to keep you signed in and to make the site work. We do not run advertising pixels, we do not build advertising profiles, and we do not sell audience data.

Data we do not gather

We do not harvest or store candidate data from Seek, Trade Me or any other job site. Every candidate in the pool chose to join it. Where an employer's role links to an external advert, we simply pass that link to matched candidates so they apply on the employer's own listing.

Your rights under the Privacy Act

Under the New Zealand Privacy Act 2020 you have the right to ask what personal information is held about you, to receive a copy of it, and to ask for it to be corrected if it is wrong. Email hello@careersnz.co.nz and we will respond. If you are not satisfied with how we have handled a privacy issue, you can raise it with the Office of the Privacy Commissioner.
